Akela Maru - Wreck Diving in the Gulf of ThailandEastern Route
Image: The Akela Maru The Akela Maru is a 3,500 ton Dutch freighter built in the fifties, lost in the sixties. We identified her by the name on the bell - wish they were all that easy! We found this one while searching for the Araosan Maru, on the far side of the Gulf, lying upright in 75m of very clear water. She seems to have broken her back, probably when she hit the bottom. There's an anchor chain draped all over the wreck which suggests she sank at anchor.
